Sorry for that.
Greetings to you, whoever you are.
I finished this novel yesterday, Charlie St. Cloud.
Really really really good book.
there's a movie for it too, starring Zac Efron :))
Anyway, it's about this pair of brothers, Charlie and Sam.
they got into a car accident when Charlie was 15 and Sam was 12.
right before the car burst into flames, they made a promise.
They made a promise to stay with each other forever, that whatever was going to happen they would be together.
The accident took Sam's life. As well as Charlie's but only for a little while.
He was revived by the paramedics, a miracle they called it.
However, a promise was made before that.
the promise to be together.
Now that Charlie was alive and Sam was dead, how were they supposed to keep the promise?
Here comes the magical part.
In the novel, people who died need not return to Heaven right away.
They had a choice to stay around on Earth, to look out for their families before moving on to the next realm.
It was like a platform, a train station from Earth to Heaven.
Most moved on though, cause staying around was only depressing.
Sam chose to stay, to keep his promise.
Charlie on the other hand was bestowed with the gift of being able to see and talk to Sam after sunset.
However the catch was that if he wanted to hold on to his brother, he would have to meet Sam everyday at twilight.
A day missed would meant that Sam would fade away, and Charlie wouldn't be able to see him any more.
Charlie sacrificed thirteen years, his entire youth, working at the cemetery where Sam slept.
At twilight everyday, they would play baseball and watch James bond movies, keeping the promise they made 13 years ago.
The story then proceeds on with Charlie meeting Tess. From then on he had to choose between keeping a promise he made to Sam, or going after the girl he loves.
Tess had an accident at sea and nobody was willing to search the entire ocean for her.
Well, except Charlie that is.
He went out to sea in the evening, and for the first time in 13 years, he broke the promise he made to Sam.
/fastforward/
Sam was hurt that his brother chose a girl over him (Sam's only 12, forgive him) and crossed over to the next realm.
-End of story-
k not really, but the ending's for you to find out yourself.
*smirk.
--------------------------------
After the long long long summary of a short story, what's my point right?
You see, many a times we make casual promises on a daily basis.
simple ones like "yes, i'll call you later" and more complex ones like "yes, we'll be together forever"
But how often do we keep them?
Im guilty of the crime too, making empty promises.
but since we cant keep them, shouldn't we have not made them in the first place?
i dont know, im just saying.
i mean, things change all the time.
sometimes we dont mean to break a promise but it just happens yknow?
i used to live on a motto that "If you cant keep a promise, then dont make one."
im reconsidering it these days.
maybe we should make promises when we really mean them.
at least if we broke them it wont be so bad right?
-shrugs-
i still feel that promises are sacred though..
they are little hopes that we humans commit ourselves to, little pinkie promises that mean more than the world to us.
let's try not to break these frail fragments of trust.
