Kindness when unexpected. It was a Sunday, a seemingly normal weekend for all except this particular pink cheeked girl who stood behind the counter at MacDonald's serving nothing else but flavoured icecream in pale cream coloured cones. She wore an impatient frown that ruined her otherwise pretty little face, and often rapped hard on the screen as she keyed in the orders of her excited customers. After all, only happy people buy icecream and their happiness do annoy her for a fair bit. The girl checked her watch, it was One O'clock in the afternoon. There weren't many customers and she has about 6 more hours to kill. As she sighed to herself in frustration, a little boy approached. His face was caked with streaks of mud, sweat was dripping down his forehead and his little eyes squinted hard at the board which was nothing but dazzling lights (he left his specs at home). "Excuse me, how much does a cone with chocolate icecream cost?", he asked the seemingly upset cashier while dabbing his perspiration with his soccer tee. "$1.50", she answered curtly. The boy scratched his head with his grimy fingers and smiled sheepishly at her as he reached into his pockets and took out his loose change, coin by coin. He turned out his pockets but that was all he had, the few pathetic looking pieces of coins. "How about the icecream without a cone?", he asked again with a now serious expression on his face. Now as this boy was fumbling with his money, the girl was growing more and more impatient. The little boy had caused a queue of people behind him and she was not the least happy with it. "One dollar. What do you want?", she answered curtly. "Uhm, i would like to have the icecream without the cone please.." She frowned in distaste and went on with her familiar routine of preparing the icecream. She placed the icecream on the counter, and with her icy tone requested for the money. The boy tiptoed and placed all the coins on the counter and took his cup of icecream with a gleeful smile. The girl counted the change and frowned, "Hey you gave me $1.50..." He beamed, " Please keep the change and get yourself something sweet, happy sunday and thank you for the icecream!". With that the young boy in his green football shirt pranced off with the cup of icecream in his hands.
I heard of this story last year, and for some reason it has stayed in my mind ever since and i've always been wanting to share it with all of you.
When i first heard it, it left this warm feeling in my heart, and it made me joyful.
It's an inspiring story and it reminds me to be concious of my every action in my daily life, and to be kind to all people.
Sometimes we get caught up with our own worries and unhappiness that we drench others with our own poison. It isn't nice to ruin another's mood, and we should be aware of this very "rule of life".
Just like how happiness is so very contagious, sadness and anger is viral.
So, let's all be hippy laughing kind people!
Say a thank you to the stranger who held the door open for you, smile at the auntie who cooks you your breakfast and greet the bus driver goodmorning when you board the vehicle!
Hahaha, i hope this post wasn't too cheesy and all.
I really hope the world will comprise of more joyful euphoric creatures. (:
